Feierlichkeiten is an in-engine aesthetic experiment. It features a lonely church in the middle of a field.
It was developed in 2019 to gather some experience with real-time rendering in Unity HDRP. I experimented with realistic rendering and grass shaders, deciding on a volumetric shading technique to render the wheat field. I am still happy with the soft and warm effect it creates. I enjoyed creating wood textures in Substance Painter and fell in love with the paint chips on the edges of wooden planks or pools in crevices, as well as any other detail that alludes to an object’s history.
The aesthetic inspiration came from my love for the humble colonial churches of rural America and Andrew Wyeth’s wistful work on the Americana.
